Writeup

“The thing that struck us about this horse was that, the day after the breeze [at the auction] we went to see him at the barn and it was like you better put the tack back on him, he was ready to train again. After breezing as fast as he did…that was incredible. That told us he has the energy, he has that gene, he has what it takes to be a very very good racehorse.”

Those are the words of David Hanley, legendary Irish horseman and General Manager of WinStar Farm. David knows a thing or two about selecting great racehorses, he and his team have selected horses like Justify, Improbable, Life is Good and many other graded stakes winners.

Trained by Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen, Pine Valley is currently based in Lexington, KY preparing for his next start on October 20 in an $84,000 Maiden Special Weight. He made his career debut at Saratoga on September 6th in a 6 furlong $100,000 Maiden Special Weight, “breaking from the gate like an absolute rocket” and flashing high early speed. After pressing the pace he tired in the second half of the race and finished 7th. Following the race, Asmussen said, “He wasn’t himself today and really needs a few more races to come into his own. I have no question about his ability, he’s very fast.”

Asmussen trained Pine Valley’s sire and is known for his ability to develop a horse’s speed while also setting them up for long successful campaigns. Pine Valley has impressed Steve at every step and is training alongside the fastest horses in his barn (a great sign).

His sire Maclean’s Music shocked the racing world when he won his first and only race by 7 3/4 lengths and posted a Beyer speed figure of 114, the highest ever figure for a first-time starter. Sidelined by an unfortunate injury, Maclean’s Music entered the breeding shed as impressively as he did the racetrack, siring Preakness winning breeding stallion Cloud Computing (LTE: $1.12M) in his first crop. Since 1995, only 11 stallions have sired a classic winner in their first crop.  His sons have continued their winning ways led by 5-time graded stakes-winning Jackie’s Warrior (LTE: $1.05M) who is also trained by Asmussen and the 3-time graded stakes-winning Drain the Clock (LTE: $570k).

His mother Je Suis Tizzy is by the great stallion Tiznow, the only horse in history to win the Breeders’ Cup Classic twice. On the track, he was known for his immense size standing 16.3 hands, and his indomitable game spirit. Tiznow is now a rapidly emerging broodmare sire. To date, his daughters have produced 39 stakes winners including Tiz the Law (LTE: $2.75M), Come Dancing (LTE: $1.2M), and Mr. Money (LTE: $1.36M). But Pine Valley’s dam (mother) doesn’t just come from a great stallion, she is the daughter of the G3 winning mare Race Artist who produced stakes-winning Cherokee Run (LTE: $909k) and Cherokee Girl (LTE: $170k).

Like his namesake the #1 Rated Golf Course in North America, we expect Pine Valley to rise to the top. Come join the round and have some fun!
